The opportunity:
We are looking for an exceptional and business savvy lawyer to join our Emera Corporate Legal team on a permanent basis. This position offers an excellent opportunity to gain broad experience as an in-house counsel in support of a TSX listed North American business leader in its mission to safely deliver cleaner, affordable and reliable energy to our customers. You will develop your existing legal and business skills, learn new areas of practice, and work closely with other members of our legal team.
As Legal Counsel your duties will be varied and broad-based through working with the other lawyers on the team as well as supporting business units in Emera. In addition, you will be involved in legal operations projects to improve the effectiveness of the legal team as well as manage legal risks to the company.
Some of the primary areas of work will include:

• Drafting and negotiating a variety of commercial agreements;

• Financings, acquisitions, dispositions, green field projects and other corporate transactions;

• Employment law and HR support;

• Cybersecurity, IT, privacy and governance issues including securities law compliance; and

• Research and advising on legislation, regulations, and other legal obligations applicable to our businesses.

You will be responsible for your personal safety, that of co-workers, and those under your direction, by observing all Occupational Health and Safety Rules and Regulations.

What skills will make you successful?

You recognize yourself in most of the following competencies, and where possible possess the skills and experience listed below:

• Professional with the highest ethical standards and integrity.

• LLB or JD degree. One to five years’ post-call relevant legal experience in private practice and/or in-house environment.

• Business degree would be an asset.

• Member in good standing of a provincial law society and eligible for admission to the Nova Scotia Barristers’ Society.

• Previous corporate, commercial, transactional, and/or regulatory experience in the utility industry would be beneficial.

• Strong interpersonal skills are a must; you work collaboratively with team members and maintain and strengthen relationships with our clients and stakeholders.

• Very organized and detail oriented.

• Display enthusiasm while maintaining a high level of productivity in a fast-paced environment.

• Effective business communication skills, with demonstrated success in presenting ideas and legal concepts in a practical and non-legalese manner.

• Comfortable with technology.

• Project management experience and skills are a plus.
