Racialized Articled Clerks Reception 2026

The Mi’kmaq, Indigenous, African Nova Scotian, Black, and Racialized Articled Clerks Reception celebrates the achievements of racialized articled clerks who are being called to the Bar.

Since 2009, this annual event has brought together justices, lawyers, articled clerks, law students, and internationally trained lawyers to connect, build professional networks, and strengthen community. While promoting diversity and inclusion within the legal profession, the reception also strives to foster mentorship opportunities and build community as newly articled clerks look to beginning their careers in the face of adversity.

This year, the Society recognized and celebrated the 10 articled clerks who were in attendance at the Halifax Central Library. The event had an overall turn-out of 55 attendees including NSBS staff, members of the Racial Equity Committee, and lawyers who attended in previous years.

The evening began with remarks from Level Chan of Stewart McKelvey—the sponsors of the annual Race and the Law Paper Prize—and NSBS President, Candee McCarthy. This was followed by an interactive networking icebreaker, inviting attendees to connect and learn more about each other.

Following the icebreaker, Chan announced the winner and runners-up of this year’s Race and the Law Paper Prize.

While the 2026 recipient, William Tiwana, was unable to attend, Chan shared a few kind words on his behalf, offering words of celebration and encouragement to his peers on this important occasion.

The event closed with a final opportunity to network, allowing articled clerks to connect with professionals from across the province to seek advice and support for their future endeavours.

Congratulations to our newly articled clerks and thank you to everyone who joined us to celebrate this achievement.
