You’re invited! EDUCATION SESSION + BENCH AND BAR DINNER
As you may have heard, the Nova Scotia Court of Appeal will be visiting Sydney, Cape Breton, in September, including hearing three of its appeals in the September/October docket in the community of Membertou. This is the first time the Court will sit outside the Law Courts in Halifax.
This inaugural event will help advance a better understanding of the role of the Judiciary and the Courts in our society and will introduce more people to the work of the Court of Appeal specifically. In conjunction with the Court, the Cape Breton Barristers’ Society is pleased to share that this visit also will provide important opportunities for legal education for all members of the NSBS, which is why we are contacting you today.
Members of the NSBS are invited to attend a free education session, hosted by members of the Judiciary, focused on advocacy, criminal case law and the judicial review process.
When: 2:00 – 4:30 p.m., Thursday, September 26, 2024
Where: In-person: Jenu Room, Membertou Trade & Convention Centre,
50 Maillard St., Membertou, N.S.
Online: Indicate preference at link below to receive details.
REGISTER: https://forms.gle/11jEXYQbrN7fvzmQ9
This free session will be a hybrid format offering in-person participation for those able to attend, as well as a livestream (sponsored by the NSBS) for members across the province.
The panel discussion on advocacy will be moderated by The Hon. Justice Robin Gogan of the Court of Appeal and will feature judges from all levels of court offering their distinct perspectives on written and oral advocacy, including their thoughts on professionalism, civility, competence, and ethical obligations of counsel.
Following that discussion, participants will receive a Supreme Court of Canada criminal law update from The Hon. Justice Anne Derrick, as well as a presentation from The Hon. Justice Cindy Bourgeois on the judicial review process.
Don’t miss this unique opportunity to hear from and engage with members of the Bench. Registration closes September 25, 2024.
In addition, for those wishing to attend in-person, the Cape Breton Barristers’ Society is hosting a Bench and Bar Dinner on the evening of September 26, 2024, with the members of the Appeal Court and the Cape Breton Judiciary. All are welcome to join us. The registration link will provide direction to register for the Bench and Bar Dinner. It’s a great time of year to visit Cape Breton! Thank you.
We hope to see you there!
