The Law Office Management Professional Standards Committee is pleased to announce the launch of a new resource on technological competence relating to cross-border travel with electronic devices.
As lawyers increasingly travel with smartphones, laptops, and other devices containing sensitive information, this resource provides practical guidance on privacy, confidentiality, cybersecurity, and professional obligations when crossing international borders. We encourage members to review the resource to better understand the risks and best practices associated with protecting client information while travelling.
Nova Scotia lawyers are ethically obligated to protect confidential and privileged information – these obligations continue while travelling for work or pleasure. In addition to searching briefcases and luggage, border agents may also demand access to lawyers’ electronic devices, including, but not limited to, cellphones, tablets, and laptop computers.
