  • Organizing and reviewing pleadings, disclosure, financial information, exhibits, expert materials and other evidence;
  • Reviewing financial disclosure and identifying missing or outstanding documentation;
  • Communicating with clients regarding documentation, disclosure, scheduling and the ongoing preparation of their matters;
  • Coordinating with lawyers, legal assistants, experts and other professionals involved in a file;
  • Following up on outstanding assignments, documentation and deadlines;
  • Reviewing files for completeness and identifying outstanding work before it becomes an issue;
  • Assisting lawyers with the preparation and organization of complex litigation matters;
  • Maintaining exceptionally organized electronic files and ensuring documents are properly saved, named and accessible;
  • Providing guidance and support to junior legal support staff where appropriate; and
  • Assisting with other substantive paralegal and file-management responsibilities as required.

The successful candidate will have at least five years of relevant legal experience, with significant experience performing paralegal-level work.

Direct experience in Nova Scotia family law is strongly preferred. We would also consider an exceptional candidate with significant Nova Scotia litigation experience and a strong working knowledge of court processes and procedures.

The ideal candidate will:

  • Have a strong understanding of family law procedure, court requirements and litigation file management;
  • Be an experienced and confident legal drafter;
  • Be exceptionally organized and capable of managing multiple files and competing deadlines;
  • Take ownership of their work and follow matters through to completion;

  • Be proactive in identifying missing information, outstanding work and approaching deadlines;
  • Have excellent attention to detail;
  • Be comfortable working on complex and document-intensive matters;
  • Be highly proficient with computers and the Microsoft Office environment; and
  • Be comfortable learning and adopting new technology, processes and systems.

This position will be particularly well suited to an experienced paralegal who enjoys family law, wants meaningful responsibility for their files, and takes pride in ensuring lawyers and clients are well supported throughout a matter.

Compensation & Benefits

The position offers:

  • A comprehensive bonus program;
  • Three weeks of vacation;
  • A matching RRSP program;
  • Comprehensive benefits;
  • Access to a fitness membership; and
  • Healthy snacks at the office.

This is a full-time, in-person position at our office, generally from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. We understand that people have lives outside of work and provide reasonable flexibility for appointments and other personal commitments.

Is This Role a Good Fit for You?

Our family law practice is busy, fast-moving and often involves complex matters with significant financial disclosure, extensive documentation, demanding deadlines and changing priorities.

The person suited to this role will understand that working in family law requires more than completing the task immediately in front of you. You need to understand the file as a whole, recognize what is outstanding, anticipate what will be needed next and take responsibility for helping move the matter forward.

You should be comfortable working with clients during what can be a difficult and stressful period in their lives, while maintaining professionalism, organization and appropriate boundaries.

You should also be comfortable working as part of a team. Our lawyers and support staff work collaboratively, and we expect our senior team members to communicate, follow through on responsibilities, help identify problems and contribute to keeping files organized and moving forward.

If you are an experienced paralegal who enjoys taking ownership of your work, thrives in a busy family law environment and takes pride in being someone your legal team can rely on, this role may be a strong fit.
