Council Adopts Enhanced Professional Standard on Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Accessibility

On June 12, 2026, the Nova Scotia Barristers’ Society Council approved a revised Professional Standard on Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Accessibility (EDIA), marking an important step in the Society’s ongoing efforts to foster a more inclusive and accessible legal profession.

The updated standard provides enhanced guidance to law firms and legal workplaces in creating environments where all individuals are treated with dignity, respect, and fairness.

Council recognizes this as a significant milestone, particularly in supporting the Ruck Report’s 21 Recommendations and the work of the Ruck Implementation Task Force. The revised standard demonstrates the Society’s commitment to addressing systemic barriers and advancing meaningful change within the profession.

This is not a new standard but, given the subject-matter and its timeliness in light of the Ruck Report and the 24-26 NSBS Strategic Plan, the Law Office Management Standard Committee believes it will strengthen commitment to equity and diversity.

Council extends its sincere thanks to the Law Office Management Standards Committee for its leadership and dedication in undertaking this comprehensive review. The Committee’s work has resulted in a stronger and more contemporary standard that will help support equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility across legal workplaces in Nova Scotia.
