The Society is seeing an increase in reports of lawyers being targeted by malicious emails, including phishing attempts designed to obtain sensitive information or compromise accounts.
Members are encouraged to remain vigilant and review the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security’s guidance on Spotting Malicious Email Messages, as well as Get Cyber Safe’s 7 Red Flags of Phishing.
These resources provide practical tips for identifying suspicious emails, links, attachments, and other common tactics used by cybercriminals.
The Lawyer Insurance Association of Nova Scotia (LIANS) regularly posts Fraud Alerts, ranging from phony debt collections, business purchases, equipment purchases, personal injury, and even phony dog bite cases. The newest Fraud Alerts can be found in the bi-monthly editions of LIANSwers. An archive of old Fraud Alerts can be found at LIANS’ Fraud Alerts.
- A recent LIANS Fraud Alert from January of 2026 provides resources and guidance on dealing with phishing/spoofing attempts: LIANS Fraud Alert: NS Lawyers’ Identities “Spoofed”.
Always be sure to independently verify unusual requests and avoid clicking links or opening attachments from unexpected or suspicious messages.
We appreciate your time and attention.
