Nova Scotia Barristers’ Society marks One Year since Regaining Trust: The Ruck Report

The Nova Scotia Barristers’ Society (NSBS) is marking one year since the release of Regaining Trust: The Ruck Report with the launch of RegainingTrust.ca, a new website dedicated to tracking the implementation of the Report’s 21 recommendations and sharing ongoing progress updates with the public and the legal community.

Commissioned by the Society and authored by Douglas Ruck, KC, Regaining Trust set out a clear and challenging roadmap to address and combat systemic discrimination within the Nova Scotia legal profession and its regulator.

While implementation is being overseen independently, the Society is dedicated to meeting the 21 recommendation set out in Mr. Ruck’s original report, while embracing the implementation strategies and insights of Independent Implementation Lead Janna Hines and the Implementation Task Force.

“Regaining Trust was a call to action — not a one-time event,” said Jennifer Pink, Interim Executive Director of the Nova Scotia Barristers’ Society. “One year later, this work continues to shape how we show up as a regulator and as a community. We are committed to being part of the broader culture change this report demands, and to creating a profession where equity, inclusion, and public trust are foundational to everything we do.”

The new RegainingTrust.ca website provides information on the progress being made towards the 21 recommendations and updates from the Independent Implementation Lead and Taskforce.

“This milestone is an opportunity to reflect on both the progress made and the work that lies ahead,” said Michelle Kelly, KC, President of the Nova Scotia Barristers’ Society. “The Society’s Council and staff remain deeply committed to the principles of equity and accountability that underpin Regaining Trust. Our goal is to continue earning, and re-earning, the trust of those we serve.”

Regaining Trust: The Ruck Report was released publicly on October 29, 2024, and is available at nsbs.org/society-news/regaining-trust-the-ruck-report/.
