AI Guide for Legal Practices in Nova Scotia

We aim to assist our members as they navigate technological changes. As new technologies reshape how legal services are delivered, we recognize both the potential benefits and risks of using powerful forms of emerging technologies like artificial intelligence (“AI”).

AI is not coming—it is already here. Many Nova Scotian lawyers and law firms are experimenting with AI tools such as ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, and legal-specific AI platforms. These tools offer the promise of greater speed and efficiency but also raise questions about how they intersect with existing professional obligations.

Lawyers are encouraged to approach AI with curiosity and caution. When used thoughtfully, these tools can enhance legal service delivery and access to justice. When used carelessly or without oversight, they can mislead courts, breach confidentiality, or perpetuate bias and discrimination.

The goal of this Guide is to help lawyers in Nova Scotia navigate this evolving landscape in a manner that is consistent with their ethical, professional, and regulatory responsibilities. Grounded in the Society’s Code of Professional Conduct, this Guide aims to provide practical considerations when assessing and using AI in legal practice.
