For the Public / How We Help the Public

Ensuring competent and ethical legal services for all Nova Scotians
As the independent regulator of the legal profession, we ensure that Nova Scotia’s lawyers provide their services with the highest professional standards.
We promote and enforce these standards on behalf of the public. Whether it’s writing a will, buying or selling a property, growing a business, or dealing with a dispute, most of us need legal services to help us through significant events. We are here to protect you when you engage these services.
We do this by making sure lawyers have the best skills for your needs and deliver services to you with the highest professional standards. If those standards slip, we are here to enforce with disciplinary actions if necessary.
We also help the public navigate the legal profession and provide a variety of resources here.
Public Resources
Information for the public on legal advice, Legal Aid, Power of Attorney, Bail, Public Legal Education and Information (PLEI), Divorce.
Locating Wills or Documents
Sometimes we can help track down missing documents by sharing a few details and connecting members of the public with lawyers.
