RISK AND PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP: Microsoft Windows 7 – Mark your calendars!
For those of you who are still using Windows 7 and are a bit confused as to the next lifecycle step being implemented by Microsoft: breathe easy, it’s not quite over yet. Here’s what’s happening as of October 31, 2014:
- Microsoft will no longer provide copies of Windows 7 Home Basic, Home Premium and/or Ultimate preinstall on new PCs. Once the stock is gone, it will no longer be replenished.
- The looming deadline does NOT apply to Windows 7 Professional, which is good news for business owners who are still leery of Windows 8!
- Microsoft is ending ‘Mainstream (free) Support’ on January 21, 2015 and transitioning to ‘Extended Support’ (which is projected to end in 2020), which will continue to provide security updates and paid hotfix support.
While you may continue to (safely) use the Windows 7 operating system, you may want to start considering upgrading while there is still time.
