The Nominating Committee nominates lawyer Shannon Mason as the Society’s Second Vice-President for the 2024-2025 Council year.
In making its nomination, the committee seeks integrity, respect for others, leadership and communication skills, strategic thinking, and consensus building. The Society strives for diversity of leadership with respect to personal characteristics, area of practice and geographic location.
I have had the distinct honour of working with Shannon, both in committees and on Council, and am delighted that she has been nominated for this very demanding yet rewarding position. We are at a critical juncture in the profession and at the Society, and Shannon’s collaborative skills, proven leadership abilities and unflappable comportment will serve her and the membership very well over the next three years.

Shannon B. Mason, Cape Breton District
Shannon Mason was called to the Nova Scotia bar in 2004 and is Senior Staff Counsel and Managing Lawyer of the Nova Scotia Legal Aid Conflict Office in Sydney. She has practiced both family and criminal law, with a current concentration in child protection. She has appeared in all levels of court in the province. Shannon is the past-Chair of Nova Scotia Legal Aid’s Children and Family Services Act Best Practices Committee.
Shannon is a member of the NSBS Complaints Investigation Committee, the Professional Standards (Family Law) Committee and the Distinguished Service Award Committee.
Shannon is a long-standing board member of the Elizabeth Fry Society of Cape Breton. An active member of the Cape Breton Barristers’ Society, she has served as a past President, and currently sits on the Supreme Court Family Division Liaison Committee, the Court Administration Collaboration Committee, and the Library Committee. Shannon has mentored articling students and junior associates.

The Second Vice-President holds a key position in governance and continues on to become First Vice-President and then President of the Society.
Additional practising lawyers from outside HRM may be nominated for Second Vice-President until April 30th, by:
