About Us

The Labour Standards Division is responsible for the Labour Standards Code (the Code) and related regulations, which establish the basic rights and responsibilities of provincially regulated employers and workers in Nova Scotia. The legislation provides a dispute resolution mechanism and enforcement tools for addressing complaints under the Code and establishes licensing and registration requirements in relation to the recruitment of foreign workers.

We help people understand and comply with our legislation and provide a timely, fair, and responsive system for resolving Labour Standards complaints and processing recruiter licence and employer registration applications.

About Our Opportunity

Reporting to the Director of Labour Standards, you will manage the overall delivery of the division’s information and dispute resolution services. You will provide leadership and guidance to a team of officers and ensure they have the tools and supports they need to provide quality and timely dispute resolution services. You will carry a small caseload of complex files to support the investigation and adjudication work of the division.

Primary Accountabilities

In this role you will:
– Manage complaint intake, assignment and workflow in the division, monitor key performance indicators and recommend and implement changes to support continuous process improvement.
– Manage a team of officers and provide effective guidance to support their settlement, investigation and adjudication work.
– Review and provide feedback on officers’ written adjudication work ensuring their investigation work is complete, they have correctly applied the legislation and their decision is sound.
– Manage a small caseload of complex files, conduct thorough investigations in an impartial, fair and timely manner, make findings of fact and legal findings, and issue written reasoned decisions.

Qualifications and Experience

You have a degree in a related field such as law plus several years of relevant experience.

You demonstrate relevant experience in interpreting, applying, and analyzing legislation, regulations, or policies. You have well developed investigation related skills with experience in areas such as research, issue recognition, and fact finding. You have an aptitude for dealing with complex issues, strong analytical skills, tact and diplomacy, and capacity for decisive action.

– In addition to being fluent in English, you are also fluent in another language such as Spanish, Arabic or French.

Working Conditions

Periodic travel to other locations within the province may be required. A valid driver’s licence and the ability to travel within the province is required.

Pay Grade: EC 10

Salary Range: $2,943.75 – $3,679.70 Bi-Weekly
