This role reports to the Head of Legal responsible for Business Line International and will work with COWI’s current Senior Legal Counsel in Canada. You will also be part of the Business Line International legal team, which includes lawyers based in Canada, Denmark and the UK. COWI’s Group Legal includes 24 employees based across Denmark, Sweden, Norway, the UK, and Canada and covers all of COWI’s business lines. Although the position is in Canada, supporting COWI’s US operations is a significant element of the role.
EXTEND YOUR POTENTIAL IN A GLOBAL TEAM OF EXPERTS
To support COWI’s growing Business Line International, we are adding another Legal Counsel to our Group Legal team. To succeed in this role, you will have solid contractual and negotiation experience, preferably with some exposure to engineering, construction, or public procurements. Experience managing disputes is also an advantage, but not a prerequisite.
On a day-to-day basis you will be responsible for contract review, negotiation, and legal risk management, including:
General day-to-day legal assistance to the operational management and project managers in Canada and the United States
Structuring, drafting, and negotiating international service contracts and joint venture agreements
Legal advice related to contract and claims management
Provide counsel in dispute and settlement negotiations, including instructing and supporting external counsel
Support, train and liaise with COWI line managers and senior management on various legal subjects, including contracts, claims management, etc.
Assist with company due diligence, general corporate housekeeping and advising on legal compliance matters, including counselling on mergers and acquisitions

To succeed in this position you should possess strong analytical skills, be business-oriented and focussed on providing solutions and results. You should also have strong interpersonal skills and embrace working cooperatively.
Furthermore, you should:
Have an excellent academic record and 3+ three years post-qualification experience as in-house counsel or within a reputable law firm
Be qualified to practice law in a Canadian province
Possess solid contractual review and negotiation experience
International experience and insurance dispute resolution is an asset
Have experience in identifying, managing and mitigating operational risk and opportunities along with excellent drafting skills
Have a high level of responsibility, autonomy and great attention to detail while keeping the bigger picture in focus
Be able to communicate complex legal issues to internal and external stakeholders in a succinct manner, including leading oral and written negotiations
Be able and willing to travel when required
