The Government of the Northwest Territories is seeking qualified legal professionals to join the Litigation Team of seven (7) based in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. This is a unique opportunity for you to work on interesting, unique, and sometimes groundbreaking legal issues not generally encountered elsewhere in Canada. This competition may be used to fill future vacancies, so all levels of experience are encouraged to apply.
As litigation council your practice would include a broad scope of issues ranging from civil litigation, labour and employment, human rights matters through to other key practice areas such as health law, professional regulation and privacy law. In these areas you will be called upon to represent the GNWT:
• in courts and tribunals during case conferences, motions, and trials;
• before Arbitrators to address labour grievances; and
• before the NWT Human Rights Adjudication panel to respond to complaints filed against the GNWT; and
• administrative tribunals.
In addition to the litigation activities above as a valued team member you will provide day to day legal advice, draft legal opinions, advise on policies, programs, and procedures, stay up to date on any law changes that may impact the GNWT and work collaboratively with clients to minimize legal risks.
To be successful in this role you need to have completed a Bachelor of Laws or Juris Doctor and either be an active member or be eligible for immediate membership in the Law Society of the Northwest Territories along with recent litigation experience.
The GNWT offers competitive compensation based on experience ranging from $115K to $172K, great leave benefits including access to deferred leave, dental and health plans, along with a defined pension benefit administered by the Government of Canada.
The greatest reward might be the opportunity to live and work in a unique community while having influence and impact in a tight knit legal community.
