Under the general direction of the Chief Judge of the Provincial Court of Nova Scotia and reporting directly to the Director of Operations of the Executive Office of the Nova Scotia Judiciary, the Judicial Research Officer provides strategic legal and policy research for the Provincial Court. Primary responsibilities include:
1) Perform comprehensive and confidential research and analysis of legal, social, economic, procedural or other related issues for the Chief Judge and the Associate Chief Judge of the Provincial Court.
2) Prepare memoranda, reports or other written material for the Chief Judge, Associate Chief Judge, the approximately 40 puisne Judges, and the 13 Presiding Justices of the Peace on matters of general application to the Court, including areas of procedural and substantive law within the Court’s jurisdiction, such as criminal law, summary offence charges and constitutional challenges.
3) On request, provide urgent research assistance during trials and applications in the Provincial Court.
4) Review and comment on draft decisions, and proofread finalized decisions, including review for publication ban issues.
Qualifications and Experience
The successful applicant for the Judicial Research Officer position must have graduated from an accredited Canadian university (or an acceptable equivalent) with a Bachelor of Law (LLB) or Juris Doctor (JD). Applicants must have at least three years of recent, related experience. Admission to the Bar is required. Bar membership is optional.
The Judicial Research Officer should possess an in-depth knowledge of criminal law and the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, as well as the laws of Canada and Nova Scotia. The successful applicant must have excellent research, writing and analytical skills, and demonstrate superior knowledge of the structure of the justice system and the role of the Judiciary. The successful applicant should have above average judgment, tact, and interpersonal skills, and demonstrate their ability to manage priorities and work effectively in a highly confidential environment.
Work experience as a law clerk in a Canadian court is considered an asset.
Pay Grade: EC 10
Salary Range: $2,943.75 – $3,679.70 Bi-Weekly
