The Alberta Crown Prosecution Service (ACPS) prosecutes persons charged with Criminal Code, Youth Criminal Justice Act, and provincial statute offences. The ACPS promotes safe communities by vigorously prosecuting cases involving serious and violent crime and working with individuals and organizations in the community to identify and implement improved and alternative approaches to the administration of criminal justice. In addition, the ACPS develops criminal law policy for the province and supports criminal law consultation with other levels of government.

Role

Reporting to the Assistant Deputy Minister (ADM) of ACPS, the Chief Prosecutor Calgary will provide strategic leadership and ensure the division remains aligned with ministry and government key strategies and outcomes. In this role, you will direct and manage the operation of the Calgary Crown Prosecutors’ Office, overseeing the administration of criminal justice according to law.

Leading and mentoring a team of senior prosecutors, you will promote standardized application of policy and legislation. Your innovative recommendations will influence changes to policies and procedures impacting initiatives department wide. Fostering a collaborative approach to the investigation and prosecution of criminal cases, you will build linkages across government, with police and other stakeholders. Contributing as a member of the Service`s senior management team and providing sound advice to the Assistant Deputy Minister, Alberta Crown Prosecution Service, will be key to the achievement of corporate goals.

Qualifications

Your background includes extensive related senior management and criminal law experience:
• Minimum of 15+ years of senior assessed legal experience;
• Minimum of 5+ years in a senior management role;
• Budget and financial planning experience; and
• Human resources experience.

Exceptional issues management, communication and relationship building skills are critical for working collaboratively with a diverse group of stakeholders. Your demonstrated skills in systems thinking, strategic business planning, and resource management will set a course for the success of the Calgary Crown Prosecutors’ Office.

A law degree and membership in good standing with the Law Society of Alberta is required.

Thorough understanding of relevant legislation, working understanding of project management and change management practices and principles will also support your success in this role.
