Certification Appeals Committee Member

Certification Appeals Committee

The Province of Nova Scotia and the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (EECD) invites applications from lawyers interested in serving on the Certification Appeals Committee.

The Committee has a critical role in the administration of the Teacher Certification Regulations made under Section 98 of the Education Act. The Committee was established to review a teacher’s certification when a teacher is not satisfied with the class of certificate granted to the teacher by the Minister. The Committee reviews the teacher’s certification and forwards its recommendation to the Minister.

The Committee is composed of three persons: one nominated by the Nova Scotia Teachers Union; one nominated by the Minister of EECD; and a chair chosen from the Regional Education Officers.

The Committee’s duties are outlined in the Teacher Certification Regulations at the following link: https://novascotia.ca/just/regulations/regs/edteachcert.htm

For the member nominated by the Minister, strong preference will be given to a candidate who is a member in good standing with the Nova Scotia Barristers’ Society, and whose area of practice includes labour law.

The remuneration for the Minister’s nominee is $600 per day, plus expenses.
