Here is what you can expect of an articling position with the legal services unit of the Secretariat to the Canada Industrial Relations Board or of the Secretariat to the Federal Public Sector Labour Relations and Employment Board.
The legal Services units are small, dynamic and collegial. Their primary mandate is to assist members in their decision-making role. They also assist officers of the Board in finding strategies and solutions to address issues that come up in the treatment of files. As such, the team is called upon to examine a variety of questions related to labour relations, employment law, administrative law and constitutional law.
Under the supervision the articling principal, the articling student supports the mandate of the legal services unit. This includes conducting legal research and providing sound legal advice and analysis on matters before the members as well as drafting a variety of documents such as legal memoranda, case summaries and general correspondence. The student will also be called upon to assist the legal services unit in reviewing members’ decisions. When possible, the student will be encouraged to attend hearings and other proceedings
