9th ANNUAL CONFERENCE

“Raising the Bar: Commitment to Excellence, Leadership and Community”

The Conference will explore topics such as practice innovation in civil and commercial litigation; early intervention and collaborative approaches in child protection matters; women of color in leadership roles; the impact of street checks from an African Nova Scotian perspective; and cultural assessments. Speakers will include Vivene Salmon, President of the Canadian Bar Association and Retired Honourable Justice Thomas Albert Cromwell, C.C., of the Supreme Court of Canada.

23rd ANNUAL GALA

“Leadership: Lifting as We Climb”

Hosted by Portia Clark of CBC Radio’s Information Morning for Mainland Nova Scotia.

CABL is pleased to announce that David Comissiong, Barbados’ Ambassador to the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and to the Association of Caribbean States (ACS) will be our featured keynote speaker. Mr. Comissiong is a former Senator in the government of Barbados, and a founding-member of the Caribbean Pan-African Network (CPAN) and the Global Afrikan Congress (GAC). He represented the Caribbean region at the 7th Pan-African Congress in Uganda (1994), and played a key role in the United Nations’ World Conference Against Racism in South Africa (2001). He is also the author of The Wide Streets of Tomorrow: Essays and Speeches on Barbados, the Caribbean and the African Diasporaand of It’s the Healing of the Nation: The Case for Reparations in an Era of Recession and Re-colonisation.

As part of our Gala celebration, we will be acknowledging the 30-year anniversary of the Schulich School of Law, Indigenous Blacks & Mi’kmaq Initiative (IB&M).

We will also be honouring Floyd Kane, Creator of Diggstown; Candace Thomas, Q.C., Partner at Stewart McKelvey; and Jalana Lewis, Associate Producer / Knowledge Lead at ANS Youth Lab.
