McInnes Cooper, suite 1300, 1969 Upper Water St, Halifax

The Halifax Refugee Clinic, in partnership with McInnes Cooper, is organizing a lunchtime training/information session on representing refugee claimants whose refugee claims are based on their sexual orientation and gender identity and expression.

Keith MacMillan, a staff lawyer at the Refugee Law Office at Legal Aid Ontario in Hamilton will be leading the workshop and highlighting the challenges working with refugees whose claims are based on their sexual orientation and gender identity, as well as strategies and approaches in legal representation for this clientele. He will also be highlighting the new guideline released by the Immigration and Refugee Board in May 2017: Chairperson's Guideline 9: Proceedings Before the IRB Involving Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity and Expression.

The workshop will be of particular interest to lawyers and legal professionals but is open to all service providers, advocates and members of the public who are interested in the topic. The presentation will be accessible in terms of language used (ie. will not be complex ‘legalese’) and acronyms will be explained. All are welcome!

A light lunch with vegan and gluten-free items will be provided.
