Professor Richard Susskind OBE will claim there are two futures for the professions. Both rest on technology.

The first is reassuringly familiar. It's a more efficient version of what we already have – professionals will heavily standardize and systematize today's routine activities.

The second is very different – increasingly capable systems will displace much of the work of traditional professions. In the medium term, these two futures will be realized in parallel. In the long run, the second future will dominate, new and better ways to share expertise in society will be found, and our professions will steadily decline in significance.
