The mandate of the Department of Justice is to support the office of the Attorney General and administer justice, including policing, community justice, victim’s services and corrections in the Northwest Territories. This mandate will be carried out in a manner which respects community and aboriginal values and encourages communities to assume increasing responsibilities.
Legal Division provides legal advice and representation to all government departments and specified public agencies. Our lawyers conduct litigation in all areas of the law including, Aboriginal law, Constitutional and human rights, labour and employment, participate in regulatory and administrative law hearings and provide legal opinions and advice. Legal Division does not provide direct services to the public.
Transfer Assignments may be considered.
We are seeking one (1) Legal Counsel with a minimum of 10 years’ relevant practicing experience to provide advice and services to departments and agencies of the GNWT primarily in the area of litigation.
The GNWT’s litigation includes a wide variety of matters before all levels of courts in the Northwest Territories, including complex multi-party litigation, tribunals and arbitrators/mediators; as well as in the following areas of law:
- Constitutional issues, including the application of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms;
- Labour and employment law (including collective bargaining) & Human Rights matters;
- Aboriginal issues and land claim/self-government matters;
- Regulatory and administrative law matters before various administrative boards and tribunals;
- Environmental, natural resources and regulatory compliance;
- Procurement matters (Contracts, RFP’s and Tenders); and
- Rendering legal opinions as requested.
Responsibilities could include other areas of law in which Legal Division lawyers’ practice.
The position requires excellent analytical, communication, interpersonal and practice management skills. Some travel will be required, depending on responsibilities assigned.
Applicants should demonstrate in which of the forgoing area or areas they are experienced. Experience in the relevant fields of law will be an asset.
A Law Degree and minimum ten years’ experience as legal counsel practicing in the same or similar areas of the law is generally required.
Bona Fide Requirement
Candidates must be members in good standing of the Law Society of the Northwest Territories or be eligible for membership in the Law Society of the Northwest Territories. Membership in the Law Society of the Northwest Territories is a prerequisite to employment.
Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.
The salary range for this position is from $64.22 per hour to $76.68 per hour (approximately $125,229.00 - $149,526.00.) plus an annual Northern Allowance of $3,450.00.
