Vice-President, Legal & Regulatory Affairs

Reporting to the Executive Vice President, Legal, Regulatory & Public Affairs, the successful candidate will be based in Halifax, Nova Scotia and will manage a team of five high performing and commercially-minded lawyers, provide legal advice on regulatory and compliance matters, as well as corporate, commercial and other legal matters in Canada and the US. The successful candidate will also be a member of Emera Energy’s Executive Team, helping to manage the overall business and its growth and development. EE is a contracts intensive business and also manages a large number of energy and market regulatory compliance requirements in multiple jurisdictions. In providing strategic leadership to the Legal & Regulatory team, the VP, Legal & Regulatory Affairs will provide clear value proposition to the company by reducing regulatory compliance risk and providing timely solutions to complex strategic questions.
You will be responsible for your personal safety, that of co-workers, and those under your direction, by observing all Occupational Health and Safety Rules and Regulations.
Skills, Capabilities and Experience:
The successful candidate must have good knowledge of US energy regulation; legal experience in complex contracting; have a track record of strong people management and leadership skills; be a member in good standing of a provincial law society and be admitted or eligible for admission to the Nova Scotia Barristers’ Society; and have a minimum of 15 years’ experience, including significant experience in a senior role. You have the ability to communicate in an effective and non-technical manner, possess solid oral and written communication skills and have demonstrated success in effectively presenting and communicating ideas at a variety of levels and successfully translating those ideas into action. You have strong organizational skills, and are detail-oriented. You are a client-focused problem solver, which in our business means that you are comfortable making and guiding decisions in a fast-paced environment and working to fixed deadlines while protecting the company’s interests. You will be a proactive team player with excellent interpersonal skills and have a keen interest in becoming involved in the company’s business strategy.
