The NSHA Legal Services team is responsible for providing effective and efficient legal counsel to NSHA and for ensuring that the affairs of NSHA are administered in accordance with the law. Legal Services is a part of the General Counsel portfolio, together with NSHA’s Privacy Office and Policy Office, under the leadership of the Vice-President, Health Services, Quality and System Performance. The NSH Research and Innovation leads and facilitates research and innovation excellence to improve the health of Nova Scotians and is committed to transforming health and health care through research and innovation. Reporting directly to the Senior Legal Counsel and Vice President Research and Innovation, the Associate Legal Counsel, acts as a corporate resource to NSHA as an integral member of the Legal Services team. The Associate Legal Counsel provides sound legal and medical/ethical guidance to NSHA employees, medical staff and senior leadership, taking into consideration other activities within NSHA and established health law practices across the country.

Associate Legal Counsel provides legal advice and strategic direction; he/she analyses and provides advice on complex, sensitive and multidimensional problems, both independently and as a part of a team. Associate Legal Counsel provides legal representation for NSHA to external parties. This position will be focused on providing such advice to the NSHA Research & Innovation team

Bachelor of Laws (LLB/JD)
Practising member of the Nova Scotia Barristers’ Society or eligible to become a practising member
Minimum of 8 years’ relevant experience
Experience in health care law and risk management preferred
Demonstrated understanding of complex contracts and key provisions of such agreements, such as indemnification, limitations of liability, intellectual property, representations and warranties, regulatory requirements, performance obligations, dispute resolution, termination and critical business and legal issues
Appropriate degree of experience and expertise in subject areas important to R&I, such as transacting on intellectual property (IP) assets, IP and research collaboration agreements, clinical trial operations, IP assignment and licenses, etc.
A thorough understanding of common law principles, statutes and legal procedures; competent research and analytical skills; effective interpersonal, oral and written skills;
Demonstrated ability to respond to client needs for quality legal services, to anticipate problems and to work effectively with clients toward resolutions
Ability to collaborate, as well as work independently, balancing competing priorities
Demonstrated computer skills
Experience advising health authorities, government departments or agencies would be considered an asset in this role, as would practice experience in one or more of the following areas: administrative law, contracts law, corporate and governance, intellectual property law or privacy law.
Competencies in other languages an asset; French preferred

Permanent Full-time Position

Salary Information:
$46.3244 – $57.90564 hourly
