RISK AND PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP: Mobile device cost-saving tips when travelling abroad

Summer is the time when most of us take a vacation to spend with family and friends after a busy winter. However, if your travel plans include venturing beyond the Canadian border, be aware that there may be additional costs associated with using your mobile device for calls, texts, emailing, web browsing, calendaring and other internet services. Before travelling, contact your service provider and consider asking the following:

  • Do you have an international package? What does it include and at what cost?
  • How do I limit my cost when checking email?
  • I do not need certain apps or features (such as calendar!) when travelling, so what steps do I need to take to ensure they are not inadvertently turned on and running in the background when checking my email?
  • How do I ensure my mobile device does not attempt to download calendar entries and email while I’m using it for phone calls?

Lastly, always double check to ensure your data roaming and data services are turned off when not in use so you are not hit with unexpected costs. Contacting your service provider to determine the cost of services available to you can save you money – just ensure you do so before you leave!
