The Society's Client Identification and Verification Regulations (Section 4.5 of the Regulations), which came into effect on November 3, 2008, were amended April 24, 2009. They outline the steps lawyers must take, and the records they must keep, to verify client identity.
The annual reports submitted by firms and lawyers to the Society includes questions about compliance with these Regulations, which were developed from the Client Identification Rule adopted by the Federation of Law Societies of Canada.
The Society has drafted a Sample Verification Agreement that you may wish to copy and modify. Our comprehensive list of FAQs is also very helpful, and will be updated as issues arise.
