Society welcomes new leadership for 2011-2012

Council

The Nova Scotia Barristers’ Society is pleased to introduce its new leadership for the coming year. Daniel M. Campbell QC, of Halifax, assumed the position of President for 2011-2012 during the Society’s 2011 Annual Meeting, held June 11 at Schulich School of Law. Joining him as Officers are First Vice-President Timothy G.J. Daley QC, of New Glasgow, and Second Vice-President René Gallant, of Halifax.

Their first meeting of Council is scheduled for Friday, July 15 at the Society’s offices. Also joining Council for the coming year are six appointed members, including Honorary President Ronald J. Downie QC, and a new slate of 13 Council members elected in the District and At Large elections this spring.

Council members for 2011-2012

Daniel M. Campbell QC, President: A partner in the Halifax office of Cox & Palmer, Mr. Campbell has been a member of the Bar since 1972 and Queen’s Counsel since 1988. His practice is primarily in litigation relating to professional liability, but includes administrative law (regulated industries and competition law) as well as intellectual property and technology law. A member of Council from 1985 to 1988, he was also Second Vice-President for 2009-2010 and First Vice-President this past year, and received the Society’s Distinguished Service Award in 2007. He serves on a number of Society committees and chairs the Model Code Task Force, which recently recommended adoption of the new Code of Professional Conduct for Nova Scotia lawyers, due to take effect January 1, 2012. A founding director and former chairman of the Canadian Lawyers' Insurance Association, Mr. Campbell was also a director of the Lawyers’ Insurance Association of Nova Scotia (LIANS). He is Chairman of the Trustees of St. Matthew's United Church, Chairman of the Trustees of Victoria Hall, an Honorary Trustee of the Halifax YMCA, and Chair of Trustees for the Halifax YMCA Legacy Foundation.

Timothy G.J. Daley QC, First Vice-President: Tim Daley QC – who will assume the presidency at next year’s Annual Meeting – is a sole practitioner with the practice group GMPD Law in New Glasgow. A member of the Bar since 1992, he has developed a practice primarily in family law, including collaborative family law. He also practises in the areas of criminal defence and civil litigation, and appears regularly in Nova Scotia Family and Provincial Courts, Nova Scotia Supreme Court and the Nova Scotia Court of Appeal. Mr. Daley currently chairs the Society's Professional Standards Committee (Family Law) and the Expansion of Family Division Working Group, and is a member of a number of other committees. His extensive volunteer experience also includes work with the Pictou County Bar Society, Big Brothers and Big Sisters, New Leaf and the Continuing Legal Education Society. He is a Past President of the Pictou County YM/YWCA, and a founding member and current volunteer facilitator in the Parent Education Program for the Nova Scotia Family Court.

René Gallant, Second Vice-President: René Gallant is Vice President, Regulatory Affairs, with Nova Scotia Power Inc. His practice focuses on energy and administrative law, and he appears regularly before the Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board. Prior to joining NSPI in 2005, he was General Counsel for the Halifax Regional School Board and an Associate at Patterson Palmer. Called to the Bar in 1995, Mr. Gallant has been heavily involved in the Society in recent years, leading task force reviews of Council’s size and composition, as well as Committee structures and mandates. He serves on a number of committees and has also assisted with the Bar Admissions Course. His community work includes serving as Vice Chair of the Board of Directors for the Canadian Partnership Against Cancer, as National Chair of the Canadian Cancer Society Board of Directors, and as a board member for the National Cancer Institute of Canada and the Canadian Cancer Society, Nova Scotia Division.
