John Bodurtha is Deputy Director of the Tax Law Services Section of the Atlantic Regional Office of the Department of Justice Canada, a position he has held since 2009. He currently litigates tax cases before the Tax Court of Canada and the Federal Court of Appeal, and serves as part of the Atlantic Regional Office’s management team and its litigation committee.
John was elected to Council on June 30, 2015 in the Halifax District Byelection. He is Co-Chair of the Society's Racial Equity Committee and also serves on the Entity Regulation and Risk Working Group. He has been a Bar Examination Screener since 2010. For the Society’s Skills Course, he provides instruction in legal writing and drafting, and volunteers regularly as a mock chambers judge.
Called to the Bar in 1996, John spent a year with Nova Scotia Legal Aid before joining the Atlantic Regional Office of Justice Canada. He is a member of the Department of Justice Canada Advisory Council for Visible Minorities, and past chair of the IB&M Initiative Advisory Committee at the Schulich School of Law.
John also volunteers as a member of the Board of Directors for Dalhousie Legal Aid and as a volunteer coach for the Halifax City Soccer Club. He is a past member of the Board of Directors for Phoenix House, a local shelter for at risk youth.
