Please join the Society in celebrating excellence in Nova Scotia’s legal profession, as we present the 2017 Distinguished Service Award to Bruce H. Wildsmith QC of Barss Corner, Lunenburg County. Bruce is legal counsel with the Assembly of Nova Scotia Mi’kmaq Chiefs/Kwilmu’kw Maw-klusuquan Negotiation Office.

We will also present George Cooper QC, John Cooper QC, Alan Hayman QC, Sweeney Hinchey QC, Joseph Macdonald QC, Bill Meehan, John Merrick QC, Paul Murphy QC and Willard Strug QC with their 50-Year Practising Certificates.

Several law student achievements will also be honoured: 

  • Ria Guidone, articled clerk at Stewart McKelvey, is recipient of the 2017 NSBS Presidents’ Leadership Award;​
  • Desiree Jones, second-year law student at the Schulich School of Law, received the 2017 NSBS Presidents' Leadership Internship scholarship and interned this past summer at Innocence Canada in Toronto; and ​
  • Rosalea Thompson, third-year law student, received the Society's 2017 Race and the Law Essay Prize for her paper, "Remembering as Solidarity with the Past: Legal Mechanisms for Protecting African Nova Scotian Sacred Places".

The Recognition Reception is an annual opportunity to honour Nova Scotia lawyers and law students for contributions that demonstrate the profession’s commitment to excellence in law, community service and access to justice.
