Canadian Bar Association-Nova Scotia's February Online CLE Trial Prep for Legal Assistants

This session will be focused on file management and court preparation in the civil context and how a lawyer and paraprofessional (legal assistant, paralegal) can effectively work together to ensure the lawyer is prepare and provide efficiency and value to the client. (Some of the content may apply to other fields; however, the focus will be on the Nova Scotia Courts, the Federal and the Supreme Court of Canada in a civil context.)

Jane O'Neil is a Partner and a former member of McInnes Cooper's Board of Directors.  She practices in the Halifax office in the Business Dispute Resolution Group. Her practice covers all areas of dispute resolution including commercial litigation, contract disputes, shareholder disputes, securities litigation, class actions, appeals, judicial review and alternative dispute resolution.

Jane has appeared in the Supreme Court of Canada, the Federal Courts, all levels of civil courts in Nova Scotia, the Nova Scotia Securities Commission, the Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board, and in private commercial arbitrations. Her clients include insurers, developers, companies and shareholders.

Jane graduated from the University of New Brunswick in 1996, was called to the Ontario Bar in 1998 and to the Nova Scotia Bar in 1999.

Rachel Barnes came to McInnes Cooper in December of 2000 after obtaining her Paralegal Services Diploma from NSCC. Rachel specializes in document management and works primarily in Summation.Rachel's primary areas of expertise include preparing lists/affidavits of documents, reviewing, summarizing and categorizing documents, preparing chronologies, responding to undertakings, assisting with discovery and  trial preparation as well as preparing IME brochures. In addition, Rachel functions as one of two Litigation Application Specialists for McInnes Cooper. This position finds her responsible for  training, trouble-shooting and implementation of the various software programs used by the paralegals in the Litigation Department.
