ABOUT THE EVENT:

The Weldon Literary Moot is an evening of legal theatre organized by students at the Schulich School of Law.

Students formulate a legal issue based on events taken from a classic work of literature and leave that issue to be (humorously) contested by outstanding third-year oral advocates and practising lawyers before a sitting judge of the Nova Scotia bench.

The evening is an exciting way for law students, the university and legal communities, and all interested members of the public to engage with great works of literature and the law.

Last year's inaugural moot saw Odysseus put on trial; this year, Dr. Frankenstein and his monster will take centre stage.

Cherly Hann of Picnicface, author and SMU Professor Alex MacLeod, Ross Burns from Gypsophilia and Professor Geoff Loomer from the Schulich School of Law will be playing witnesses at the trial.

In addition to being an evening of entertaining legal theatre, the Weldon Literary Moot is a fundraiser in support of local charity Halifax Humanities 101.

This organization is dedicated to providing an introductory university-level great books course for adults otherwise unable to access higher education. The organization's goals are related to broadening the extent to which disadvantaged people can take part in community life. This is a cause the Weldon Literary Moot Society is dedicated to supporting. Participants from the program make up the jury at the moot.

We will also be holding a raffle after the event (made possible through donations of local businesses), and all ticket sales will go directly to the charity.

Please join us for a reception following the trial, where the jury's verdict will be announced and where the raffle will take place. 50% of all drink sales will also go to support HH101, with thanks to the Wardroom (King's campus bar).

All funds raised at this event will help build the charity's library of works for study, and help provide items such as bus fare and child care for participants in the program.
