Director, Lawyers’ Insurance Association of Nova Scotia
Our client, the Nova Scotia Barristers’ Society, is responsible for the Lawyers’ Insurance Association of Nova Scotia (LIANS), which administers the mandatory professional liability insurance program for lawyers in Nova Scotia. We are seeking a seasoned professional to lead the Association, ensuring the future is as successful as its past. LIANS, established and operated pursuant to the Legal Profession Act and Regulations, is part of the Nova Scotia Barristers’ Society’s public protection mandate, and ensures that claimants know that lawyers have financial security and that lawyers have a minimum level of professional liability insurance to respond to financial liabilities that may arise from their practices.
Working collaboratively with the leadership of the Barrister’s Society, the Director reports to the Board of LIANS on insurance matters. S/he is responsible for the leadership of LIANS through the implementation of effective claims management processes, proactive risk and practice management advice, and lawyers’ assistance programs. The Director provides professional support to the Board and Board Committees as well as reports and advises the Board on matters of policy, claims activity, budget and current issues for the insurance program. S/He liaises with external auditors and the actuary, manages the claims process, and oversees the development and delivery of proactive risk management and loss prevention programs for the benefit of members. The Director manages the performance of LIANS staff, initiates new strategic goals for LIANS, liases closely with the Society on its regulatory work, and is fiscally responsible and accountable for developing budget and allocating resources.
As the ideal candidate for this position, you will have a minimum of 5-10 years senior insurance experience, preferably in the professional liability area. You have extensive knowledge of insurance litigation, a sound understanding of claims fund issues and knowledge of effective resource application. You are a skilled relationship builder and an excellent communicator with the drive to motivate a team to achieve the program objectives and goals. In addition to an understanding of governance in the not for profit sector, you have a superior understanding of sound business concepts. This is a role of some sensitivity and you will have the skills necessary to respond to both the reality and perception of crises.
